We were wondering how long it would take before someone tried to capitalize on the death of Libyan strongman Gaddafi and it here it is! Like so many other scam emails they try to social engineer you into believing their scam by using names and current events in the news. This scam email claims to be from the former Defence Officer but like all the other scams we highlight – it’s just a bunch of lies.

This scam email is easily identifiable because what ‘former defence officer’ of Gaddafi is going to know you AND use an ‘AT & T’ email address from the United States while claiming to be hiding in a ‘small European country’? It was the US who lead the bombing of the nation that lead to the capture and killing of Gaddafi! It’s the little clues like this that should tell you these types of emails are scams which attempt to part you from your identity and/or money. This email also attempts to assuage your fears by including a nifty link to a youtube video – don’t fall for it.

The email is being sent from a hacked server account via PRIVATEDNS.COM – a known shady hole on the internet. This webhost does a piss-poor job of watching the traffic over their network so it could be some time before these email stop from this particular account.

Do not respond to this email and if you have – contact your local legal authorities immediately. The scam email as sent to us is included unedited below:

Top Secret My Friend,

From your heart accept this offer as we have lost the battle,my name is Muhammad Ali Chief defence Officer to late libyan President Muammar al-Gaddafi,who rule libyan for over 42 years in leadership, I am writing you this mail with deep pains from my heart, because my life is also at riks after the death of my late leader, i am hiding in one of the small European country where i cannot be traced at the moment and am using this opportunity to release secret fund deposit given to me by my late President to import guns weapons for the war which we finally lost at the end, this fund was deposited in one of the bank account in Europe, the sum of Fourty Five Million Euros.

As the battle is over, I want to give you the secret Deposit Key of this fund to make this claim, and use 70 percent from the fund to establish good investment that can benefit both of us in any country of your choice and 30 percent to set up orphanage home as i have found God and accept him in my heart after losing my family in this war.So if you are really interested to work on this dream, get back to me with all your information to enable me direct you on how to contact my late President Muammar Gaddafi’s lawyer who will guide you with all the secret documents backing this fund.

http://www.youtube.zzz/watch?v=3ba139StBco

Thank you as you listen and i still have more to tell you as we proceed.

This is a different scam than most that we highlight coming via email, as this one tries to trick you into installing software on your computer so that the crooks may steal your personal data and hijack your computer for further spamming and scams.

We’ve seen many scam emails claiming rejected ACH and related payments as of late and most take you to a hacked website where you are asked to fill in a form with your log in and password to your banking details. This one is after the same thing but does it in a different way. Once you visit the hacked website and install the software on your computer they will log your keystrokes and monitor all your internet and computer activities to steal your logins and passwords along with your personal identity.

The easiest way to avoid these scams is to never visit the hacked websites (as some have malware and other badware ready to try to self-install), and never ever install software from anywhere without first investing it and ensuring it is really necessary and safe. Run your virus programs on any software you download – no matter the source!

The scam email is below:

To the urgent attention of Accounting Dpt.!
In order to reduce the number of cases of fraud and scams, we have adopted a new security system. In this connection all your ACH and WIRE transactions will be suspended until you set up the required updates. In order to rehabilitate your account, you are required to install a special security software. Please use the link below hxxp://tibetctrip.cxx/123c2f/index.html and carefully read the instructions there to proceed with the installation.

We apologize for the inconveniences caused to you by this measure. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Sincerely yours, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Security Department

The email originates from a hacked server in Italy and the hacked website with the malicious software is on a different server at 208.113.223.29 which is run by NEW DREAM NETWORK LLC – NewDream.net

Sometimes we get scam spam emails that just make us wonder what the heck the scammers were thinking – or not. That is oh so true of today’s attempted scam spam email purporting to be from Western Union.

Some scams are just so obvious (or at least should be) and this one is no exception. Just look at the vast amount of spelling mistakes, poor grammar and the feeble attempt to part you and your money. When reading such an email – like all scam emails – look for the most obvious clues. Putting aside the pathetic attempt at grammar and spelling, we have a scam claiming that you won a lottery held by Western Union. Western Union does not hold any such lottery and you would find that out with just a couple minutes on the Western Union website. And even if there were such a lottery that you didn’t enter, they don’t even know your real name but claim you as a winner – that’s when you know something is up.

If you get the following scam email just delete it and move on. Well, get a chuckle out of how poorly crafted it is before deleting if you like – it’s got to be good for something.

This is a brand new email scam that just arrived in our inbox targeting Royal Bank of Canada customers. This email scam might not last long as the scammers have pulled the images directly from the official RBC website for their scam email. If anyone with half an ounce of sense at RBC is monitoring such use (they should be banning hotlinking anyways) they should take notice of this scam rather quickly. That’s the hope anyways!

This email scam contains wording lifted directly from the RBC website – word for word in fact. Obviously this was done to get away from the usual broken English featured in these scams and to give it more of an air of being real. The dead giveaway is the destination of the outgoing links – they lead to a compromised server and website at – seriouslychristmas.com.au/images/rbccc.xxx. Don’t visit the website – it could be hosting other nasty stuff for the unsuspecting like malware.

If you have followed the link in this email and have filled in the form you need to contact the real RBC immediately and explain to them what you have done. They will give you further instructions.

The entire scam email is below:

Subject – RBC Royal Bank: Security Notification

RBC Online Banking Security Guarantee

Need Help? Chat Live

100% reimbursement for unauthorized transactions in RBC Online Banking+

To provide you with greater peace of mind, we have developed the RBC Online Banking Security Guarantee. If an unauthorized transaction is conducted through your RBC Online Banking service, you will be reimbursed 100% for any resulting losses to those accounts.+

Brand new scam making the rounds is this one proclaiming to be a helpless cancer victim who needs your assistance. As with most scams of this type that come via email, you should quickly notice some tell-tale signs that give it way as a scam.

Here is the email as sent to us:

My dear brethren am very glad to write to you now Thank you.My name is Mrs Bertha c Alwin, I’m from Netherlands a widow and 53 years old.
I am a Ovarian cancer patient who is laying helplessly in the Hospital, You might know that ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer among women, and it causes more deaths than any other type of female reproductive cancer.i have lost my husband in the past.

Before the death of my husband he deposited some funds in a Bank for our well being but due to sickness we are unable to make us of this funds. Our aim is to help the needy and serves Humanity, My dear brethren i will like to know more of you and also to know if you can be able to assist me in one thing.

I will be waiting for your response.

Warm Regards
Mrs.Bertha c Alwin

First the email is not addressed to you or anyone else. Who asks for help for monetary matters without at least knowing someone’s name? Second the email tries to pull you in with a combo of pain and suffering and great giving. Tugs the heart-strings doesn’t it? And that’s the point but don’t let you guard down. It’s all BS and meant to rob you blind.

Anyways long story short – this email or variations there of are all scams. Do not respond to them and if you have, you may need to contact your bank and/or local police department to take further action to protect yourself.

Brand new email scam targeting Canadians who bank online via TD Bank’s EasyWeb services. Made to look official this email scam looks to steal your login details.

The email attempts to convince you to click on the links contained within it and be lead to a specially crafted website in order to steal your EasyWeb login credentials. Once they have this they will attempt to get into your real bank account and create further havoc by stealing your money and identity.

The scam uses one of the usual bank login detail stealing scams of saying your account password was changed. As with all of these emails don’t follow the links as the website may also try to install malware onto your computer.

The full scam email is below. The links lead to – flangetastic.com/thumbsclips/EasyWeb.htm and not the TD Canada Trust bank website. This scam website will not stay online long as the scammers hotlinked the images directly from the TD website! Not too bright.

Online Access Password Reset

Thank you for banking online at tdcanada trust bank. Our records indicate that you have recently reset your Password online. This email has been sent to confirm that you initiated this change.

If you feel you have received this email in error and you did not reset your Password, please go to tdcanada easyweb secure site and verify your details immediately or logon below

Thanks again for choosing EasyWeb TDCanada Bank

Well it took longer than we thought to get a scam email using Libya as a reason or excuse to perpetrate their pathetic little scams. This one reads pretty much like they all do – some sob story about something or other and how you some stranger contacted by email can get a piece of a big fat paycheck. And just like all the email scams – it is nothing more and nothing less than that.

As with so many of these scams notice the garbled English, capitalization of words that don’t need it and of course the use of a free email address to do their scam. I especially love the line, “Please be honest to me.” You couldn’t make that stuff up! LOL

Sorry Omar – no fraudulently obtained money for you! The scam email is noted in full below. If you responded to this email already be sure to contact your banking institution and local police department. Admit you were scammed and try to recover.

Dear Friend,

Firstly, I apologize for sending you this sensitive information via e-mail Instead of a Certified mail/Post-mail,this is due to the urgency and importance of the information so I humbly crave your indulgence to read this e-mail with all seriousness of purpose devoid of any doubt in your mind because This project is based on Trust, Confidentiality and Sincerity of purpose in order to have an Acceptable meeting of the minds.

My name is Omar Mustafa the only son of Mustafa Ramadan who is a well know oil merchant in Libya.
As you very well know, Libya is gradually undergoing a rebuilding process in some parts and there is much need for reconstruction. I left Libya to Tunisia on Monday after surviving the massacre by Gaddafi’s troops. They said Gaddafi’s troops were using tanks and snipers against residents, littering the streets with corpses and filling hospitals with the wounded.
My father Mustafa Ramadan was among the people that died in the attack. You need to see the city of Misrata, it is hell.Misrata rose up with other towns against Gaddafi in March 2011 but most others have been retaken by government forces.

Before my Father’s death, he knew that Libya is getting dangerous everyday, he cannot afford to leave his business fund in Libya for any reason since business is not going on and knowing fully well that these funds is used in sponsoring his oil business.
He deposited some of the fund $10,000,000.00 (TEN MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS)) to in an Oversea Bank before his untimely death. He used me as the beneficiary of the fund. But as it stands now, things are very rough and tight with me as I had to leave Libya while scamperring for safety.I want to claim the fund but I don’t have the resources to do so.I have the whole documents he used in depositing the fund.I want to change the beneficiary since I am not capable of claiming the fund.I am in desperate need of a Reliable and Trustworthy person who will receive, secure and protect this fund till I come over to your country for trhe sharing.
I have agreed that 40% of this money would be for you as Foreign partner, while the balance will be for my colleagues and I. I will visit your country for the disbursement according to The percentages indicated above once this money gets into your Account. Please be honest to me.

Your financial compensation will be 40% of the total FUND.

To commence this transaction, I require you to immediately Indicate your interest by a return e-mail and enclose the Following information:

1. Full name
2: Your private telephone and Fax numbers.
3. Occupation and Nationality.
4. Age
5. Present Location.

I count on your absolute confidentiality, transparency and trust while looking forward to your prompt reply towards a swift conclusion of this transaction.
As soon as you receive this mail contact me through my private E-mail address:mustyomar@sify.com

My Sincere Regards,
Omar Mustafa.

This for us was an easy scam to identify – we don’t even have nor use any type of Scotia Bank product or service so how could we have our card used by someone who should not have? That’s right – it’s a blanket spam email used to find the few that do have a ScotiaCard and also fail to see that the rest of the email screams scam.

This scam email tries to trick you into logging into their fake website. They don’t even go to great lengths to try to hid the scam website which resides on yet another hacked website and server. The scammer is attempting to get you to sign over your banking details at – saurabhsaxena.com/www.scotiaonline.scotiabank.com.pcbanking.reqOption-SCLoginSSL.action-display.token – notice the beginning of the url – that is the scam site. Do not ever visit these sites as they could also be trying to install malware or other viruses onto your computer by viewing them with unsecured browsers.

The only attempt to make the email look official comes with their addition of French instructions in the email along with real links to Scotia Bank. It’s the one single link that is masked that will lead to the fake website.

If you have already gone to that website and filled in your personal banking details you will need to contact both your bank and your local police department and notify them of what has taken place.

The scam email is noted in full below.

Your ScotiaCard was used for an Interac Debit for $7.82. If unrecognized, call 1-800-4SCOTIA (1-800-472-6842). Please check your Account Details on Scotia OnLine for more information.

Please do not reply to this email. This is an outgoing message only. To make any changes to your InfoAlerts setup, please login to Scotia OnLine or call 1-800-4SCOTIA (1-800-472-6842). You can also visit scotiabank.com/infoalerts for general information about the service. To ensure that future email messages from Scotia InfoAlerts are not diverted to bulk or junk mail folders, please add InfoAlerts@scotiabank.com to your online address book.

This one just came into our inbox and is brand new in the wild. This fake Bank of Montreal – BMO – email is trying to trick you into signing into a fake account in order to steal your banking details.

This email doesn’t contain much information but attempts to play the security card in order to scare you into believing someone was trying to access your account. They hope you fall for it, click the link and go to their fake site in order to copy your login details. They will later go to your real BMO account and try to drain it.

The website the link within the email goes to is http://somomedical.com//conf/bmo.com/BMO/BMO/BMO/BMO/BMO/BMO/BMO/BMO/bmo/index.htm – notice they are trying to trick you into believing the url is actually from BMO when it is in fact from somomedical.com which was reported hacked on 2011/02/10 and obviously has not been cleaned. Do not visit this website as it may attempt to install malware on your computer.

The fake Bank of Montreal email is below.

An attempt to access BMO Online Banking was denied 30mins ago:

If you do not remember trying to access online banking, please select:

You have to love this scam email. This is a reverse Nigerian scam in that the scammer claims to be with the US government and is seeking to protect you from other scammers. Just priceless.

This email scam like all the others comes with all the tell-tale signs that it is a scam intended to steal your money and/or identity. How many times must we state that anyone affiliated with a government organization or corporation is not going to use a free email address for official business? This is one of the easiest clues for you to tell the difference between a scam email and something legitimate. As well note that they never actually use your name but somehow know that YOU were scammed by someone else. They know this but cannot use your name to when warning you? Yes, clearly a scam. As well note the poor spelling and grammar throughout the email.

Western Union is also identified as the method of money transfer because it is one of the most commonly used ways scammers steal your money and get away without a trace. NEVER send money via Western Union or any similar service unless you know without a shadow of a doubt just who the money is going to. If in doubt – don’t send it!

The scammers are using a hijacked hosting account in the United States to facilitate their crime.

Like all these scams do not respond. And if you are the intended target – someone who has already been scammed – learn your lesson already.

The scam email is noted below.

Attention,

After proper and several investigations and research at Western Union and MoneyGram Office, we found your name in Western Union database amongst those that have sent money through Western Union to Nigeria and neighboring countries indicating that you have truly been swindled by those unscrupulous persons. We presently are working hand in hand with Western Union to track every down fraudsters and advise you not to respond to their e-mails, letters and phone calls any longer to avoid being a victim

In this regard a meeting was held between the Board of Directors of The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) United States Of America and it was agreed that all Victims of Scam should be compensated to the tune of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand United States Dollars ($120,000).This will be transferred to you out of the funds that Federal Government of Nigeria and The United Nations Organization (UNO) has set aside for compensation to everyone who have in one way or the other been swindled.

WARNING!!!!***Please note that we will no longer be liable for any loss, cost or expense whatsoever, suffered or incurred by You in connection with the fraudsters. Be warned!

We have deposited your fund at Western Union Money Transfer agent location EMS Post office Lagos, Nigeria.
We have submitted your details to them so that your fund can be transferred to you. We have also insured your fund for security reasons and to avoid misappropriation.

Contact the Western Union agent office through any of the email
addresses stated below;

Phone : +234-816-877-3966

Email : wu_rdp@rediffmail.com

Yours sincerely,

Richard Wales,
Investigation Officer.
***************************************************************************************************************************
Please note that e-mails, letters and phone calls are currently been made to unsuspecting persons by fraudsters
claiming to have access to their funds. Everyday, people throughout the world are falling victim to scams of one
way or the other. It could be an unexpected prize draw or lottery win, or a chance to invest in an exciting new
money-making or investment program . In the circumstance, we unreservedly advice you to dissociate yourself
from all correspondence and transactions entered into based on evidently fraudulent and fictitious claims.
